DIVE DEEPER: THE EBS MICROBASS 3 - YOUR 'BASSIC' NEEDS IN A PEDAL

Using parallel signal paths to blend a clean bass tone with overdrive is nothing new. Players such as Billy Sheehan have used the concept for decades. While his EBS Signature Drive pedal reflects that approach, the inspiration behind the EBS MicroBass 3 actually came from our own Fafner II bass amplifier. The goal was to bring its versatile dual-channel architecture into a compact analog preamp that covers virtually every need a bass player has—on stage, in the studio, and at home.

When do I need a MicroBass 3?

There are plenty of situations where carrying your favorite bass amp isn’t practical:

  • fly-in gigs
  • festivals with shared backline
  • rehearsals
  • silent stages
  • studio sessions
  • home recording

This is exactly why the MicroBass 3 exists.

When we designed the MicroBass 3, the intention was to make it possible for bass players to bring their own sound even when forced to travel without their own bass rig.

In a live situation, connect the MicroBass 3 to the amplifier’s Effects Return, bypassing the amp’s own preamp. Since many modern bass amplifiers include an Effects Return, this allows you to keep your familiar tone regardless of the backline. At the same time, the dual balanced XLR outputs can feed front of house with independent pre- and post-EQ signals.

These days, when silent stages and in-ear monitoring have become popular, the MicroBass 3 has also become an all-analog solution for players who prefer real analog circuitry over digital modeling.

The MicroBass 3 is also an ideal tool when recording at home or in a studio, since it allows sending dual balanced signals, either Post and Pre EQ, or in stereo (if using effects in the Effects Loop in stereo mode).

Finally, the MicroBass 3 is a great tool for practicing and developing as a bass player too, with its powerful headphone amp and aux input, allowing you to play along to music.

What sets the MicroBass 3 apart from other preamp pedals?

While claiming it’s better than others would be subjective, one feature that genuinely sets the MicroBass 3 apart is its internal operating voltage. It runs on ±15 V.

High-end studio equipment often runs on ±15 V because it provides:

  • very high headroom
  • excellent transient handling
  • extremely low distortion
  • wide dynamic range

Most preamp pedals run from a single 9 V supply (so do the MicroBass 3). While this is perfectly adequate for many applications, it usually limits the maximum clean output swing compared with a ±15 V design, reducing the available headroom.

The EBS MicroBass 3, however, operates from ±15 V internal supply rails for studio-grade headroom and high output swing. This is possible because an internal power conversion stage generates high-voltage rails from the standard 9V pedalboard power input.

 

Why headroom matters for bass

Bass has large transient peaks.

For example:

  • when playing slap bass
  • if using aggressive fingerstyle
  • when hitting the low B string
  • if using active 18 V onboard preamps

A higher-voltage preamp is less likely to clip those peaks, so the sound remains:

  • cleaner
  • punchier
  • more dynamic

Many players describe this as sounding more “open,” “effortless,” or “less compressed.” That is why the ±15 V capacity matters.

 

What else does the MB3 offer that benefits bass players?

As mentioned above, the MicroBass 3 offers both a clean channel and a drive channel that can be blended or switched between with an A/B footswitch. The EQ filters are all very powerful, true to EBS heritage, making it easy to create a wide variety of sounds.

The drive channel incorporates three different drive engines to choose between: Thin, Normal, and Deep. Add to that Lo and Hi gain modes for each type, and a set of EQ controls to put the drive in the right place in conjunction with your clean path.

The built-in tuner is activated as soon as you stomp the Mute button, which makes it easy to get in tune quickly between songs without needing an external tuner.

The MicroBass 3 uses a high 10 MΩ input to handle passive, active, or piezo pickups.

The onboard adjustable compressor/limiter is similar to the one featured in EBS amps and helps to control the peaks of your sound when needed.

What about speaker simulation?

The MicroBass 3 is designed as a high-quality analog preamp rather than a complete amp-modeling platform. If your setup requires speaker simulation for direct recording or FOH, it’s easy to add using an external IR loader or speaker simulator. This gives you the freedom to choose the cabinet emulation that best suits your sound, while keeping the MicroBass 3’s analog signal path at the heart of your rig.

 

Bottom line: Why analog still matters

Digital amp modelers offer enormous flexibility, while the MicroBass 3 takes a different approach.

Rather than simulating dozens of amplifiers, it focuses on delivering one exceptionally clean signal path with the headroom and dynamics associated with high-voltage analog studio gear.

Every stage of the audio path remains fully analog. There is no A/D conversion, latency, or digital processing between your bass and the output.

For many players, that immediacy and simplicity are exactly what they want.
